What the work actually looks like
What the work actually looks like
Cargo pilots fly scheduled and chartered freighter aircraft that move express parcels, e-commerce shipments, pharmaceuticals and time-critical freight — often on overnight networks (typically Boeing 737-800F or A321F freighters in India). The role is distinct from a passenger airline pilot (freight, load-and-trim and night ops instead of cabin operations), from military and helicopter pilots (different licences and mission types), and from flight instructors and ground-side cargo flight-operations roles (dispatch, load control). In India the career runs on the DGCA licensing ladder: 10+2 (Physics, Mathematics, English at 50%+), Class 1 medical, PPL, CPL with 200 flying hours, the DGCA theory papers, RTR(A) radio licence, then airline/cargo type ratings and hour-building to ATPL. India’s express and e-commerce logistics boom sustains demand for freighter crew at operators such as Blue Dart Aviation, Quikjet Cargo Airlines, SpiceXpress and IndiGo’s cargo division.

Career progression
Class 11–12: Science stream (Physics + Mathematics)
Take PCM with English; secure ≥50% aggregate in Physics, Maths and English — the DGCA CPL eligibility baseline. Add DGCA Class 2 medical assessment early to confirm fitness.
Entrance/admission to a DGCA-approved FTO
Apply to flight schools or the IGRUA entrance examination (IGRUA fee ≈ ₹55 lakh; reserved-category NSP scholarships and state subsidies like Haryana’s HICA can offset costs).
PPL → CPL training at the FTO
PPL first, then the CPL programme: 200 hours flying (incl. 15 multi-engine), 350 hours ground school, simulator time, and the DGCA theory papers (Air Navigation, Meteorology, Air Regulations, Technical General, Technical Specific) at ≥70%.
RTR(A) + AELP + Class 1 medical
Clear the WPC radio-telephony exam and the DGCA-approved Aviation English Language Proficiency test; hold a valid Class 1 medical for CPL issue.
Multi-Engine Rating & hour building
Add the multi-engine rating and build hours as an instructor, charter or regional pilot to reach airline-hire minima.
Cargo airline entry + type rating
Join a cargo operator (Blue Dart Aviation, Quikjet, SpiceXpress, IndiGo CarGo) — type rating on the B737-800F or A321F freighter, then line flying as Junior First Officer / First Officer.
First Officer → ATPL
Accumulate hours toward the 1,500-hour ATPL requirement while flying overnight freight sectors.
Cargo Captain & progression
Upgrade to Captain after the ATPL command assessment; later branch into training, fleet management, safety or flight-operations leadership.
